Summer: Our time to stay organized!
It is easy to get caught up in the day to day and lose our routine of organization. As a therapist (and human), I too struggle with organization and sustaining my routine. Below, I have added a few things that have not only helped me but my colleagues and those I serve.
Organization seems external but really if our head is clouded we tend to feel more overwhelmed which sways us out of our routine. So first, if you don’t have one already or do but don’t actively use a calendar (electronic or paper planner) … START! Yes, it seems like a hassle writing all our or our families’ appointments, events, etc., but it is much less stressful knowing our plans rather than our plans popping up and piling up.
Here is a link to some of our favorite planners:
The second part is a bit more external… Your space (living space, bedroom, closet, bathroom counter, kitchen cabinets, etc). We all wish it was that easy to stay organized but the key is follow through. It is important to tidy up so it doesn’t fill up. We often carve out “time” to deep clean but if we tidy up behind ourselves after cooking dinner, unloading the sports equipment from the car or unpacking our work bag then we don’t need to designate time to clean up after ourselves. It is human for us to feel overwhelmed when things are messy around us, or the dishwasher is full and has been full for the last day or so, etc. The quick few minutes we put in to tidy up after our meals or activities will in turn save ourselves hours at the end of the week or month.
